THL is one of Chinese phone manufacturer has been starting with the first THL V7, thats phone is using MediaTek's processors from MTK6573 to single core 1GHz MTK6575, and today there is MTK6577, and  THL has accompanied with MediaTek to powered THL smartphone.

Prices for these adapters have now surfaced on Apple’s website, however you’re going to have to hand over some cash to get one. It’s the official Meizu launch day today! While not all stores in China have the Meizu MX available for sale, they do (after all) have demo units. We were lucky enough to spend some time with the dual core Meizu MX from Meizu today. Find out what we thought after the jump.

First things first, we owe Meizu 2 huge ‘Thanks!’ 

The first thanks is for their help yesterday. After our visit to our local Meizu dealer yesterday, and finding they had no MX’s due till later this month we contacted Meizu who called the store to find out what was going on.

After a few short and helpful emails they had confirmed that the store have in fact got the MX for demo (why this wasn’t made clear on my first visit I don’t know) and that I was able to try one today. Thanks!

Our second thanks to Meizu is not just a thanks but a ‘well done’. Well done Meizu for making a very well made, high qualityAndroid smartphone! Wow, the MX is a far cry from the old M9!

Meizu MX First Hands On

We entered the store earlier today and asked to see the MX demo unit, unlike yesterday when we asked the MX was handed over (from the draw of the counter) and we were left to have a good look at the new Meizu phone.

If you are use to the Meizu M9, the first thing which will strike you when getting the MX in your hand is it weight. While the M9 is a very lightweight phone the MX is reassuringly heavy, giving the phone a nice solid feel.

The solid feel continues with the quality of construction with the body being made of high quality plastics. The glossy white rear is especially nice and looks of excellent quality. Again this is a totally different impression the M9 gives when in the hand.

Meizu MX Android OS

We didn’t have time to play with all the features on the MX, but if you have used an M9 nothing should really surprise you. The only real differences (we saw) were to the on screen browser button, and that there are options for the front camera and flash in the camera app.

The rest of the Meizu’s Android Gingerbread OS seems to be the same as the M9’s, that’s not to say there aren’t changes just that we didn’t see any with our brief time with the MX.

The OS is fast, and we experienced no problems, lag or bugs while navigating the menus opening apps and playing games.

Meizu MX Camera

The 8 mega-pixel camera on the MX is a huge improvement over the M9’s 5 mega-pixel unit. The rear camera is fast to open, and takes good looking photos without any fuss.

The old Meizu M9 suffers from a slow shutter speed which means many photos turn out blurred if there is even the slightest movement, the MX however takes photos at a more acceptable speed and with greater clarity.

When compared to the Xiaomi M1 which also has an 8 mega-pixel camera, the MX seems to produce better images with more natural colours and less ‘noise’.

The Meizu MX is the first Meizu phone to support a front camera. As you would expect the front camera is only really designed for video chat and so the quality is much lower than that of the rear camera, but it suits it’s purpose fine.

Xiaomi M1 vs Meizu MX

Many people are going to be comparing the Xiaomi M1 to the Meizu MX, I certainly was, but today after getting some hands on time with the MX we couldn’t possibly place the Xiaomi in the same league.

Both offer a very similar specification, dual core CPU’s, 8 mega-pixel cameras and custom UI’s, but Meizu’s obvious attention to detail gives the MX an overall superior feeling when compared the Xiaomi M1.

The MX is a better made phone with a better camera and much better screen than the Xiaomi M1, but its also 1000 Yuan ($158) more expensive, however it’s probably going to last a lot longer in your pocket than the M1.

So would we buy an MX?

Would we buy a Meizu MX? While we are really impressed at the build of the MX, nothing really jumps out and screams ‘buy me1!’, the choice of buying the MX over a similar Samsung or HTC phone would, in our opinion, simply come down to which user interface you prefer (I personally like the Meizu Flyme UI), as the function of the MX is as good as it’s rivals.

If you are in the market for a solid, well made dual core Android phone to replace the phone you have, we would definitely suggest putting the Meizu MX on your list of possible phones.

If you already have a good Android phone with a UI you like, you will definitely want to wait for the Quad core MX to arrive.

Android ICS on the Meizu MX

Come May this year the quad core MX will arrive with Android 4.0 ICS (Ice-cream Sandwich). Meizu have already mentioned that Android 4.0 with the Meizu Flyme UI will offer some new functions, other ICS phone don’t have, this could be the deal breaker the MX needs.

If Meizu can give the MX some extra functionality through the updated OS, they could well have the next must have phone!

Conclusion

So what do we think of the Dual Core Meizu MX Android smartphone from our brief time with it?

Well its a very well made phone, with great hardware, good camera and proven Meizu Flyme OS. The functions are on par with phones for a similar price, but we have to say the quality of the MX feels superior to other brands offering Android phones for the 2999 Yuan mark ($475).

We can’t wait to see what Meizu can do with Ice-cream Sandwich on the Quad-core MX come this May!

Xiaomi release news in his forum, it said in End-November or early December, they will release new MIUI V4 beta version based on Android 4.0. In order to demonstrate their progress, last night the first time the company released a MIUI V4 part of the design draft.

Improved text input and spell-checking

The new voice input engine lets you dictate the text you want, for as long as you want, using the language you want. As the voice input engine enters text, it underlines possible dictation errors in gray. After dictating, you can tap the underlined words to quickly replace them from a list of suggestions.

Data usage controls let you monitor total usage by network type and application and then set limits if needed.

Control over network data

Mobile devices can make extensive use of network data for streaming content, synchronizing data, downloading apps, and more. To meet the needs of you with tiered or metered data plans, Android 4.0 adds new controls for managing network data usage.

In the Settings app, colorful charts show the total data usage on each network type (mobile or Wi-Fi), as well as amount of data used by each running application. Based on your data plan, you can optionally set warning levels or hard limits on data usage or disable mobile data altogether. You can also manage the background data used by individual applications as needed.

Designed for accessibility

A variety of new features greatly enhance the accessibility of Android 4.0 for blind or visually impaired users. Most important is a new explore-by-touch mode that lets you navigate without having to see the screen. Touching the screen once triggers audible feedback that identifies the UI component below; a second touch in the same component activates it with a full touch event. With user permission, other applications can contribute events to the calendar and manage reminders, for an integrated view across multiple calendar providers. The app is redesigned to let you manage events more easily. Calendars are color-coded and you can swipe left or right to change dates and pinch to zoom in or out agendas.

In the phone app, a new visual voicemail features integrates incoming messages, voice transcriptions, and audio files from one or more providers. Third-party applications can integrate with the Phone app to add your own voice messages, transcriptions, and more to the visual voicemail inbox.

Capture the picture you want, edit, and share instantly.

Rich and versatile camera capabilities

The Camera app includes many new features that let you capture special moments with great photos and videos. After capturing images, you can edit and share them easily with friends.

When taking pictures, continuous focus, zero shutter lag exposure, and decreased shot-to-shot speed help capture clear, precise images. Stabilized image zoom lets you compose photos and video in the way you want, including while video is recording. For new flexibility and convenience while shooting video, you can now take snapshots at full video resolution just by tapping the screen as video continues to record.

To make it easier to take great pictures of people, built-in face detection locates faces in the frame and automatically sets focus. For more control, you can tap to focus anywhere in the preview image.

You can crop and rotate pictures, set levels, remove red eyes, add effects, and much more. After retouching, you can select one or multiple pictures or videos to share instantly over email, text messaging, bluetooth, social networks, or other apps.

An improved Picture Gallery widget lets you look at pictures directly on the home screen. The widget can display pictures from a selected album, shuffle pictures from all albums, or show a single image. After adding the widget to the home screen, you can flick through the photo stacks to locate the image you want, then tap to load it in Gallery.

Improved email

In Android 4.0, email is easier to send, read, and manage. For composing email, improved auto-completion of recipients helps with finding and adding frequent contacts more quickly. For easier input of frequent text, you can now create quick responses and store them in the app, then enter them from a convenient menu when composing. When replying to a message, you can now toggle the message to Reply All and Forward without changing screens.

For easier browsing across accounts and labels, the app adds an integrated menu of accounts and recent labels. To help you locate and organize IMAP and Exchange email, the Email app now supports nested mail subfolders, each with synchronization rules. You can also search across folders on the server, for faster results.

For enterprises, the Email app supports EAS v14. It supports EAS certificate authentication, provides ABQ strings for device type and mode, and allows automatic sync to be disabled while roaming. Administrators can also limit attachment size or disable attachments.

For keeping track of incoming email more easily, a resizable Email widget lets you flick through recent email right from the home screen, then jump into the Email app to compose or reply.

Hardware

When we first received our review unit, it was actually the packaging that caught our attention. Unlike most other phones, the Xiaomi Phone comes in a thick, pale brown box that's both eco-friendly and exceptionally rigid (you may recall a photo from the launch event showing a person standing on one such box), and the box art focuses on the phone's internal components (you can tell that Xiaomi's emphasis is on the specs rather than the appearance here, but more on that later). Some of you might be disappointed to learn that there aren't that many accessories within the box: you'll only find a USB cable and a power adapter (for China, of course). To be honest, we don't see this as an issue for phone nerds -- the lack of headset, for instance, is likely because Xiaomi assumes its users will pick their own headphones anyway. Also, this keeps the cost down as well. There's no point in wasting money on making mediocre headsets that come with many phones these days, right?

It's time to get to the meat. While Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun famously said his phone has adopted the "no design" design, we couldn't help but think of a similar-looking device -- no, not an iPhone, but the LGOptimus Black. The 149g phone isn't particularly slim, but the body width and rounded edges give us a nice grip. There are only three touch buttons below the display: menu, home and back. Wait, no search button? Thankfully, there's a fix if you wish to do so -- it's actually the two-stage camera button on the right hand side, towards the bottom of the phone. Xiaomi calls this the MI button, and it can be customised to perform other tasks such as prompting the search tool, take a screenshot, launch an app, toggle WiFi, et cetera. As a camera button, we dig the feeling when it's pressed half way for focusing, but the full press could use a more apparent click feedback.

The only remaining buttons are the power button at the top right and the volume rocker on the right hand side -- all are within an easy reach with our fingers. Flip to the back and you'll see there's not much going on across the cover (which consists of graphite for better heat dissipation) except for the openings for the camera module and a little secondary mic for noise cancellation. We'd say the overall build quality matches those from other leading brands, which is a surprise for this price point. Our only complaint here is that sometimes it's hard to determine whether the cover is snapped into place when putting it back in, so hopefully Xiaomi can give this a tweak for the retail version.

Interface and settings

We've already mentioned earlier that the Xiaomi Phone is powered by the company's self-developed MIUI Android (2.3.5) system. Glancing at the home screen alone, it would appear that MIUI has merged some of iOS' features into Android; in other words, there's no app tray, so all the apps are spread across the home screens. In some ways this is more convenient, but for those who aren't familiar with this layout it may become cumbersome. For instance, while rearranging the icons, we forgot that there was no app tray and had therefore managed to accidentally deleted some apps. Of course, those who transition from iOS to MIUI wouldn't have the same issue.

In terms of homescreen customization, the Xiaomi Phone uses a similar method for editing widgets as seen on the Galaxy S II: each are displayed in the form of icons at the bottom, and when dragged around the home screen the amount of space required is highlighted; or you can just look at the dots displayed under each icon for an idea on how much grid space is needed. Moving on to the notification tray, MIUI offers two layouts: one is much like HTC Sense's where the general notifications and the quick settings are split into two tabs. The other mode merges the two together, with the quick setting buttons aligned along the bottom scrollable bar. If you're often frustrated by the lack of certain shortcut keys for, say, changing the screen brightness or toggling WiFi tethering, then you'll definitely love these highly customizable trays.

Going back to the homescreen, externally MIUI offers many options -- not only can you download themes, but when applying them, you can also pick just some of the features from each theme, thus minimizing the chances of having the same skin as other users. Depending on the theme, you may also be able to toggle the dialing pad or texting app directly from the lock screen -- the default themes has two extra draggable tabs to enable this, very convenient, though Meizu's M9 also has this feature.

The fun doesn't end there. If you head over to settings, there's a stash of homescreen transition effects (cube, fade, roll, et cetera) for you to choose from, all of which ran smoothly on our Xiaomi Phone. Additionally, you can see that MIUI has added some of its own elements there, the most interesting one being the battery settings -- here you can set your own level for low battery warning, as well as customizing the battery icon. If you're into RPG games, there's even one that looks like an HP status bar for giggles.

Bundled apps

In addition to the tweaks in the OS, MIUI's also fiddled with some of the bundled apps as well as throwing in some handy tools. Let's look at the bundled apps first: the dialing pad does smart dialing and also supports quick dialing for your favorite buddies; whereas in texting the conversations are displayed in threads with customizable themes. For those who care, another special feature lies in the calendar app where you can also see the lunar calendar. Hey, it is a Chinese phone, after all.

Now, we don't normally pay attention to file management apps in Android, but we totally dig MIUI's offering: here the files can be browsed by file type (music, videos, pics, docs, etc.), and it even supports FTP! Another noteworthy tool is the call blocker app, which lets you set a white list, black list and SMS text filter, all of which can also be toggled automatically at a set time as well.

For those having to keep an eye on data usage, the Xiaomi Phone comes with its own monitoring app that can alert you when you hit a set limit, and you can even configure it to just cut off the data connection to save your piggy bank. Oh, and there's also a firewall for you to fiddle with while you're at it.

Multimedia and browsing

Compared to most other native Android music players, MIUI's own take offers a bit more oomph: you can stream music from an online chart (presumably only available within China), edit ID tags while playing tracks, and download lyrics plus album art. Speaking of which, we were surprised that even though iTunes had already set the album art for some of the tracks, the Xiaomi Phone failed to recognize them and needed us to download new ones.

So how about the eight megapixel camera, then? Well, there's certainly a heavy taste of iOS in the app but with plenty more functionality, including anti-shake, continuous shooting, self-timer, filters (such as black and white, sepia and negative), scenes (night, theater, beach, snow and many more), skin enhancement and many more. The overall focus speed (both auto and manual) didn't disappoint, and likewise with the picture quality -- fine detail, nice colors without over-saturation; though sometimes the white balance was a bit off and needed manual adjustment.

As for video recording, the Xiaomi Phone currently only supports up to 720p MPEG-4 format, with a video bit rate of up to around 6,260kbps. In a well-lit environment we obtained some nice footage, but at night, the frame rate dropped dramatically to make up for the exposure -- this is the same bug that's seen on many HTC phones, which is a real shame.

Last but not least, we want to quickly talk about the internet browsing experience: the Xiaomi Phone's native browser supports tabbed browsing as well as full-screen browsing, and it even predicts the URLs as you type. Needless to say, Flash is supported and it loaded quickly for us, but we noticed that while scrolling up and down, the Flash content would overlap the browser's interface. This should be easily rectified in a future software update anyway.

Performance

Being one of the few devices sporting a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260 SoC, we'd be silly to not do any benchmarking with the Xiaomi Phone. Accompanied by an Adreno 220 graphics processor, 1GB RAM and 4GB ROM, a slick performance is a given -- after all, Xiaomi did start off as a third-party ROM developer, so system optimization should be a piece of cake for it. From the scores we obtained, we'd say the Xiaomi Phone is on par with the Galaxy S II despite the higher clock speed: on Quadrant the former got 3,040, which is only a bit behind the Galaxy S II's 3,396. However, the graphical performance showed mixed outcomes:

While the scores aren't that exciting when compared side by side, the Xiaomi Phone does have one more trick up its sleeve: the massive 1,930mAh battery. From our normal usage (internet browsing, gaming, taking photos for half an hour each) plus the usual phone calls and texting, our phone easily made it over 12 hours; and even with a bit more web usage (like jumping on Facebook and Whatsapp) we still got at least 10 hours of juice. For a dual-core phone this isn't bad at all.

Most recently, Jun is the founder of Xiaomi Tech, a startup with a very ambitious goal: it wants to take on the likes of Apple in the mobile phone industry, by producing a high quality phone that’s sold at prices significantly below the competition. You’ll find a video of the interview above, and here are some of the highlights:

Asked about the fact that his new company includes many former employees of tech giants, Jun recounted a joke — he said that if he could merge Microsoft, Google, and Motorola, he’d be able to take on Apple. So he went after employees from each of them as he builds a new mobile phone company.

Lacy then asked about the difficulty involved with launching a new phone, which isn’t something many (if any) startups in the US would attempt. Jun pointed out that the Chinese mobile phone market is more open that the US market — unlike the United States, where the phone you use is largely dictated by the carriers, in the Chinese market the phone manufacturer doesn’t need to maintain good relationships with carriers, as consumers can buy and use what they want.

Jun also discussed the long-term strategy for Xiaomi: they’re going to sell their hardware at around cost, then make money through the software, which gets updated every week. The phone sells for 1999 RMB, which is not cheap, but is less expensive than competitors — it’s around $240 in the US. The company has faced unforseen challenges in managing the supply chain (recent floods impacted some suppliers), but Jun says he’s confident they’ll push through them.

Asked whether Jun thought Chinese consumers would favor his phone over, say, Apple, Jun said that he thinks that there will be some sway, but that it won’t be a crucial factor. He points out that half of the OS’s users are international.

Asked about his success as an investor, Jun outlined his strategy. Five years ago, he identified three key areas to invest in: mobile internet, ecommerce, and community/social networks. Those twenty or so investments have proven to do quite well: Jun says that the companies now have over $1 billion cash combined.

Finally, to conclude the interview, Lacy asked Jun about his key advice to entrepreneurs. His answer?

Screen

One of the main areas that have had a redesign on the XL compared to the original Sensation is the display. The first Sensation had a pretty nifty 4.3 inch Super LCD screen with qHD graphics. Although the resolution has now been downgraded to WVGA (still pretty excellent in all honesty), the screen itself has been bumped up to a more spacious 4.7 inch SLCD affair.

So while the original Sensation was a fairly dapper device for things like web content and video, the Sensation XL is even more so with its larger screen. 4.7 inches may be too large for some people, but for true entertainment freaks it is a dream to behold.

Power

Some superheroes have the power to move mountains and if the Sensation XL was in a Marvel comic it would be such a superhero. It has a colossal 1.2GHz dual core chip and 768MB of RAM – power that was the preserve of computers until a few years ago. It would have been nice to see an upgrade from the Sensation's original RAM to a more efficient 1GB, but in real world terms there is not much difference to be noticed.

This lump – if we may call it that for effect - means there is nothing on the current mobile phone earth that can slow up this device – not even its HTC Watch video streaming service.

Watch

Watch is a very cool idea from the HTC boffins and one that shows the company's want for direct competition with Apple. The company has released this application that allows users to pay a fee and stream the latest Hollywood films to the phone. Time will tell whether this works out, though we can be of testament to its brilliance and have had a few great viewing experiences on the 4.7 inch screen.

Aesthetics

Although not the most beautiful phone in the world, the Sensation is a lovely phone to hold for its size. It is not the thinnest smartphone although it feels nice in the palm and looks smaller than it is thanks to its curved corners. The aluminium body has a very premium feel to it and the fascia and glass covering all look great and give that distinct HTC look.

The best thing about HTC Sensation XL deals is that this phone does not feature the same garish red colour scheme that was found on the Sensation XE, and opts instead for a more crowd pleasing option of black or white.

Sense

The phone also comes with HTC’s latest Android interface, which we now deem to be necessary on all phones and all makes, due to its brilliance. The first Sensation came with Sense 3.0, but the Sensation XL is one of the first HTC phones to come with the new Sense 3.5. Version 3.5 adds many new features as you would expect, but also offers one of the biggest redesigns that have been seen in quite a long tim.

Beats Audio

As mentioned, the Sensation XL is one of HTC's first smartphones to carry the Beats Audio brand. SO what does it have to offer? Like the Sensation XE this phone comes with some Dr Dre Beats Audio in-ear headphones in the box. These are not only higher quality than the sort of headphones you would normally get with a new phone, but they also have some pretty impressive bass on the go.

The Sensation XL also includes plenty of software features to put this to good use. This software can enhance the bass on all areas of the phone, and allows you to play around with equalizer settings in the music player. Insert the Beats headphones when listening to music and you will be provided with the option to add extra bass. As many commentators have pointed out, this will probably be more useful for some forms of music than others.

The rumoured iPhone 5 had been on the tip of everyone’s tongue for several months, and the release of the iPhone 4S has come as a bit of a disappointment to many who expected a completely new and better looking device. It may not be called the iPhone 5, but a lot of the iPhone 5's rumoured features still managed to make their way into the iPhone 4S. A lot of them didn't though. Let's take a look at some of the things that people were most disappointed about regarding the iPhone 4S.

Redesigned Body

Obviously the biggest thing that people were expecting with the iPhone 4S that failed to make an appearance was a redesigned body. The device didn’t get the new body we were expecting, whether it was a tear drop design, aluminium backed phone or a wider and larger screened iPhone. We’re just left with the exact same phone, with the same shape – something many people never envisaged and something that came as a huge shock.

This was partly to be expected though. Apple has really only designed two different phone bodies, and doesn’t exactly have a proven track record for releasing a completely new design each year. When you stop and think that the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS all shared the same physical design, what made people think that the iPhone 4's design would only remain in use for a year? Especially when it is one of the best phone designs on the market!

Larger Screen

We were also under the understanding that the iPhone 5 would have a larger screen; however we still have the same size screen on the iPhone 4S which some people are not happy about. We expected a bigger Retina screen at least 3.7 inches in size, possibly even 4 inches, but in fact we got a 3.5 inch screen of the same size on the device. This leaves us with the same bezel on the body and a screen Androids would laugh at.

Again this comes back to Apple sticking with the same design as the iPhone 4. Redesigning the body and trying to incorporate a larger screen takes a lot of time and effort, while Apple have clearly focussed their attention on the software side of things. One of the reasons that Apple have always stuck to their guns regarding the 3.5 inch screen is to ensure that the iPhone is a pocketable device.

Larger screens may have their benefits for video and web browsing, but they also make many Android phones exist in a limbo state between smartphones and tablets. The iPhone 4S has no such identity crisis.

Weight

You would imagine that Apple could have reduced the weight of the components in the iPhone 4S to allow it to fall in line with the <a href="http://www.best-mobile-contracts.co.uk/phones/Samsung-Galaxy-S-II.aspx">Galaxy SII</a> and the other lighter devices on the market. The iPhone is smaller and so should be slighter in its weight; unfortunately this is not the case. The iPhone 4S is actually heavier than the iPhone 4, despite the lack of redesign.

The device is also thicker than many of the others on the market. Looking at the width of the iPad makes you wonder why Apple didn’t at least keep the same shape but make the device slimmer – another disappointment.

Having said this, the iPhone 4S does incorporate more hardware that adds to its weight, and which also makes it difficult to slim the phone down. Besides, do we really need a slimmer phone than the iPhone 4S? The amount of occasions where you would actually need to pop your phone into a brown paper envelope or slide it under a door are actually few and far between.

Siri Voice Control

Who really cares for Siri or will actually use it? This is being touted as the main new feature for the iPhone 4S and the thing that really differentiates it from the iPhone 4. Every iPhone has one big feature and for the 4S this is it. For 2010's iPhone 4 it was FaceTime video calling. FaceTime was lauded by Apple as a breakthrough in innovation and a feature that would change the way we interact with smartphones. A year later though, and it turns out that not many people have actually used FaceTime for more than 5 minutes after buying their iPhone 4.

This software has been done before and is rarely utilised when available as no one wants to talk to their device in public. Of course, there are those people who took to using Bluetooth headsets on all possible occasions, even when their hands are perfectly free to use their phone, and they will most likely adore Siri and all that it has to offer. The main problem with Siri is that it is not even completed yet. When iPhone 4S contracts go on sale on October 14^th Siri will still be in beta. 'Beta' is a euphemism widely used in the technology industry that roughly translates as 'not working yet'. And this is the iPhone 4S’ central feature.

Last week, Amazon sent lots of invites to a press conference being held this Wednesday. They has not given any details about the press conference, but everyone assumed it was to release the new Amazon Kindle tablet. Before the day, we know a bit more about the tablet.

Amazon wants to make sure consumers know this isn’t the same old Kindle e-reader but something completely new and different. The 7-inch tablet is prepped for a mid-November launch and will feature Amazon’s very own customized version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread and will make the OS look largely unrecognizable as far as traditional Android skins go. Make no mistake, this is all about Amazon and their AppStore. Powering the device is a Texas Instruments dual-core OMAP processor (no word on clock speed but most likely 1GHz). As far as pricing goes, the device is expected to launch at an affordable $250 and $300.

Amazon has sent out press invites to all the major tech news websites  announcing a press conference for September 28th to be held in New York. If you’re an Android fan there’s probably been a night or two where you keep up late wondering what Google’s name for the next version of Android operating system would be. According to a “trusted news” over at ThisIsMyNext, the next version of Android OS could be named — JELLY BEAN. That’s great. Keeping true to Google’s alphabetical order, we’ve seen Android versions Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and now (possibly) Jelly Bean. Keep in mind it was long rumored that “F” would be Flan before later revealing itself to be Froyo.

If you were expecting some big changes for Ice Cream Sandwich, you may be disappointed. Apparently, some of the more “game-changing stuff” Google was supposed to unveil for Ice Cream Sandwich has actually been pushed back to Jelly Bean says TIMN’s sources. I don’t know about you — but that actually made my stomach sink. This takes me back to when Google said Gingerbread would introduce a “major UI overhaul,” only then to find a black notification bar and new talks that it was pushed back to Ice Cream Sandwich. ICS could be the unifying of their phone, tablet and TV OS’s and little else. But if it’s one thing Android has taught me through the years, it’s definitely patience. Hopefully we’ll hear more on Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean when the Nexus Prime is introduced in a few more months.

**UPDATE: Like I first suggested, TIMN has another source claiming that the Jelly Bean title isn’t finalized yet but definitely in the running. I mean, it’s not like there are many “J” sweet treats to choose from. Oh — and if you were bummed out about Ice Cream Sandwich’s “game-changing stuff” being pushed back to Jelly Bean, the source went on to say that there will still be some fairly major architectural, functional, and design changes in store for ICS. So, any way you slice it, ICS will still be a major release.

We’re hearing from a trusted source this afternoon that the next version of Android after Ice Cream Sandwich will be known as “Jelly Bean,” continuing Google’s longstanding tradition of naming Android builds after sweet treats in alphabetical order. What we don’t yet know is the version number — in fact, Google has yet to say what Ice Cream Sandwich’s version number will be, much less Jelly Bean’s.

Additionally, our source tells us he’s hearing that the “game-changing stuff” that had originally been scheduled for Ice Cream Sandwich is now being pushed to Jelly Bean, though we don’t know exactly what those big features are. Since its launch at Google I/O in May, the implication has been that Ice Cream Sandwich will help unify Android’s phone and tablet efforts — represented right now by Gingerbread and Honeycomb, respectively — into a single trunk, but beyond that, very little has been said about what ICS will bring to the table.

With rumors of the Ice Cream Sandwich-powered Nexus Prime from Samsung hitting a fever pitch lately, it seems likely that an announcement is imminent (in fact, Eric Schmidt has said as much), so hopefully we’ll get some insight on where these two builds shake out very shortly.

Update: We’re hearing from another well-regarded source that Jelly Bean is in the running for the name, but that the choice hasn’t yet been finalized by Google; for what it’s worth, the pickings are fairly slim for desserts with “J” names, so Jelly Bean seems like a solid choice. The source goes on to say that there are some fairly major architectural, functional, and design changes in Ice Cream Sandwich, so by all appearances, this is still going to be a big-time release. Of course, that doesn’t mean Jelly Bean (or whatever Google ultimately calls it) won’t have a big outing in its own right, but the indication is that ICS won’t just be a warmed-over Gingerbread or Honeycomb.

That’s remarkably small for a tablet, but it’s large when you consider that the Kindle Tablet will come preloaded with Amazon’s Cloud Player for music and Amazon’s Instant Video Player for movies. It means you’ll need a much smaller hard drive for your tablet, which is part of the reason Amazon is able to keep the price of the Kindle Tablet so low.

4. It will reportedly come with a free subscription to Amazon Prime.

The Amazon Prime service—which normally costs $79—gives Amazon shoppers advantages like free two-day shipping and no minimum purchases for free shipping. When you buy the Kindle Tablet, Tech Crunch says the plan is to give away a free subscription to Amazon Prime. So if you’re a frequent Amazon shopper, you’re basically getting a very useful service for free when you buy the Kindle Tablet.

Listen, we could go on and on and on listing the specs of the Kindle Tablet. The new iPhone 5 cases are available from Shenzhen manufacturer, based in China. Available in some designs and colors, they again suggest that Apple is planning a redesign for its anticipated next generation iPhone.

 

Like third-party cases that began to crop up in China in July, the latest designs appear to show a mute switch that has been moved to the right side of the device. On the iPhone 4 and all previous versions of Apple's smartphone, the mute switch has been located on the left side, above the volume buttons.

 

The cases also show curved sides on the iPhone, in a design much like the iPad 2. Those sides level off to a flat back that can be stable when placed on a table.

The new iPhone 5 cases also show volume buttons that are more akin to those on the iPhone 3GS and its predecessors with an elongated shape. On the iPhone 4, Apple adopted metal, circular volume buttons, while the longer buttons remained on last year's fourth-generation iPod touch.

In fact, the alleged design of the new iPhone has many traits in common with last year's iPod touch, including the volume buttons and curved sides. But the new cases also clearly show a headphone jack on top, as well as the moved mute switch, which are features currently only found on the iPhone, as well as the iPad.

The cases stand in contrast to numerous reports which have indicated the next iPhone will closely resemble the currently available iPhone 4. In addition, a number of leaked components have shown a next-generation handset with the same size and shape as the iPhone 4.

But still other rumors have suggested the next iPhone will be a "major redesign," lending support to the cases that have proliferated in China. That has led to some speculation that the other, iPhone 4-like components might be for a new low-end iPhone 4 intended to replace the iPhone 3GS, which sells for $49 with a new two-year service contract.

Eric Schmidt continued to emphasize some of his favorite speaking points, from cloud computing to the future of the Android OS, at the Dreamforce conference held in San Francisco last week, . He also touched briefly upon Google’s mobile platform, confirming the launch of Android Ice Cream Sandwich for sometime in October or November. His words:

“We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October/November, which everyone’s really excited about.”

Got your sights set on the next version of Android operating system, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich? We knew it was coming near the end of the year, but we now at least have a slightly more specific time frame straight from the horse's mouth. Google's own Eric Schmidt revealed in an interview with Salesforce.com's Marc Benioff that ICS -- the highly-anticipated update to Android that will merge elements of Honeycomb and Gingerbread into one universal OS -- can be expected to arrive in October or November. This matches up with rumors saying the Nexus Prime will be released in the tenth month, but it's the first time we've heard anything official from El Google since I/O four months ago. Google has only ever officially mentioned a Q4 release, though rumors have recently point to the operating system coming to market as soon as October, coinciding with the launch of a new Nexus-branded device. From Schmidt’s wording, it seems a late October/early November release is most probable, though most likely as an exclusive to the aforementioned handset. It could take additional months before the OS will start trickling out to other non-Nexus handsets. But that’s the word from the horse’s mouth, and seeing as September is already speeding along we don’t have much longer to wait at all to get our hands on a bit of this nice cool Ice Cream Sandwich treat. Looks like the Angry Birds craze isn’t about to let up anytime soon if this new merchandise is any indication. Adding to the Angry Birds phenomena are these adorable speakers shown off at IFA this year. I’ll admit, I’m not an Angry Birds junkie but even then, it’s hard to deny the appeal of these cute stereo critters from Gear4.

Okay, we admit it, we want one of these Angry Birds speaker docks from Gear4 seen on the floor of IFA here in Berlin. Amazon Kindle tablet has been the hottest item on the rumor news ever since rumors first popped up last year, and the first real hands-on device is now showing up. TechCrunch had the opportunity to go hands-on with the new Amazon Kindle (and yes, it’s simply being called the Kindle) and their report, while offering no visual proof, should leave those awaiting the new tablet with mixed feelings. First of all, this isn’t the Honeycomb heavy-hitter everyone was expecting. No, it is a device with a completely overhauled user interface built up from a pre-Android 2.2 build. It borrows heavily from Amazon’s design  language with a color scheme featuring black, blue, and orange highlights.

Much ink has been spilled in the rumor mill about a coming Amazon tablet, and now those rumors look to be confirmed. TechCrunch has apparently gotten some time with Amazon's forthcoming slate, and reports that it has a 7-inch, backlit color capacitive screen and is bereft of physical buttons. Word on the web is that the hardware is already good to go, and Amazon is making the last few software tweaks before it goes on sale this November. The tablet is running a heavily skinned version of Android that was developed without any help from the folks in Mountain View. It apparently has a Cover Flow-esque UI, and is deeply integrated with all of Amazon's services (Cloud Player, Instant Video Player, Appstore, and of course the Kindle app). Best of all, it will reportedly cost a scant $250 -- not quite TouchPad territory, but well underneath the iPad's $500 price. Let the next great tablet war begin.

It’s called simply the “Amazon Kindle”. But it’s not like any Kindle you’ve seen before. It displays content in full color. It has a 7-inch capacitive touch screen. And it runs Android.

Rumors of Amazon making a full-fledged tablet device have persisted for a while. I believe we were one of the first to report on the possibility from a credible source — the same person who accurately called Amazon’s Android Appstore. That source was dead-on again, it just took Amazon longer than anticipated to get the device ready to go. They’re now close.

How do I know all of this? Well, not only have I heard about the device, I’ve seen it and used it. And I’m happy to report that it’s going to be a big deal. Huge, potentially.

The specs aren’t nearly as impressive as the dual-core beast we have heard rumors of. Within the device said to look somewhat like a BlackBerry PlayBook is found a single core chip is in place (and if a 10-inch version were to launch it would run a dual-core, not quad-core, CPU), it houses 6GB of internal storage, and will be WiFi-only. Possible 3G versions are in the works for release on US mobile providers, but nothing is final. It lacks hardware buttons (controls are relegated to on-screen, has no cameras, and might be limited to two-point multitouch.

While the Amazon Kindle tablet might not be the iPad killer everyone hoped for, it still looks to make a pretty big splash. It is fully integrated with Amazon’s various services and will rely heavily on the cloud. A big advertising campaign combined with the popularity of the Kindle brand should amount to huge sales. Does it have the potential to oust the Nook Color (or its rumored sequel) from the top of its class? Certainly. Is it the Android tablet savior most hoped it would be. Very far from it. If you're looking for an affordable 7 inch Android tablet that won't empty your wallet, look no further than Lenovo's new IdeaPad A1 tablet, which was announced today at the IFA Conference. It may not be top of the line of tablets, but for the price point, this little guy is definitely going to be a hard one to beat, except Haipad.

The 7-inch Lenovo IdeaPad we first caught a glimpse of after it moved through the FCC back in July has been officially announced at IFA. Perhaps the most surprising element of the new tablet is its price, which starts at a very affordable $199 for the 8GB model. Keeping in the tradition of sub-$200 tablets, you won’t get the latest version of Android (or at least not the latest version meant for tablets). The Lenovo IdeaPad A1 comes with Android 2.3 out of the box and sports a single-core Cortex A8 chipset and dual cameras.

But life isn’t all rainbows, and the 8GB version won’t be shipping in the US. Instead, American citizens will have to settle for the 16GB or 32GB model priced at the slightly more expensive $249 and $299 respectively. What the IdeaPad A1 does boast over other slate’s of its class is the backing of a respectable brand and higher quality construction.

As our previously reported that early iPhone 5 case are “ready for shipping” in China. China case factories are confident enough in the leaked designs that they are starting to produce these all kinds of cases. Today, all types of iPhone 5 cases are flooding the market, and we have a new gallery of these case designs. Only an iPhone that is as thin as an iPod touch could fit in these cases perfectly.

The cases are available on online store: DigitBuying.com, and the wholesale market in Huaqiangbei, Shenzhen. They come in various colors and material. They allegedly revealed some design clues regarding the upcoming iPhone 5. In addition to being wider and longer, the cases show the mute switch being moved to the opposite side of the device, and the form factor being tapered into a slight “teardrop” design with rounded edges. So, what will the iPhone 5 look like? 

News from the Digitimes this morning may have Apple shaking in their iPads, especially if Amazon is able to succeed.

The Digitimes reported that Amazon tablet is expected to start shipping in October. The 7-inch tablet, supplied by Quanta Computer, is expected to begin shipping some time in October. The news was reported from sources along Amazon’s component suppliers. Additionally, Amazon is also expected to begin shipping a 10.1 inch version of the tablet beginning in 2012. Foxconn Electronics (no stranger to Apple) will handle the orders.

This is nothing new, as it has been reported before that Amazon would begin shipping the tablet to go along with its popular e-reader, the Kindle. What is new is that we are starting to get firm dates on when it will be shipped, as well as sizes, and what it will have in it.

If the tablet is powered on Google’s Android operating system, it could finally be a way for Google to get Android firmly in the tablet market and make it count. The Samsung Galaxy tablet, powered on Android, has seen mixed reviews, and Hewlett-Packard recently scrapped its TouchPad. It uses its own WebOS operating system.

NVIDIA Corporation is also thought to be inside of the Amazon tablet, handling the manufacturing of the processors for the device. No word yet on whether the 10 inch tablet would be more powerful than the 7 inch version, but that makes sense. We have no confirmation yet.

Amazon has long followed the Procter & Gamble model of giving customers the razor head, and charging for the razors. Amazon can afford to give away the Kindle and likely its new tablet at near breakeven prices, or perhaps a slight loss, as long as it sells copious amounts of software. It also wants you to buy products from Amazon on its devices, another plus. That business model has made the Kindle the world’s #1 e-reader, and could pose a serious threat to the dominance of the iPad in the tablet space.

It’s not crazy if you make money doing it. That’s why Amazon Chief Jeff Bezos can’t be called crazy — and why his ability to somehow make money by selling hardware at a loss could be a problem for Apple‘s iPad.

In a report released on Monday, Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps asserts that Amazon could sell between three and five million tablet computers in the fourth quarter if can find a way to sell them for less than $300 each.

So far, of course, the tablet boom has been little more than an iPad boom. Apple sold more than 9.25 million iPads during the quarter ending June. HP’s TouchPad has sparked a similar buying frenzy — briefly — but only because the Palo Alto, Calif.-based tech conglomerate slashed its tablet’s price to $99 on its way out of the market.

That could change, Epps asserts. “Amazon’s willingness to sell hardware at a loss combined with the strength of its brand, content, cloud infrastructure, and commerce assets makes it the only credible iPad competitor in the market,” Epps writes. Time for Apple to “prepare for war,” she asserts [fwiw: who else would really like to see Apple design chief Jonathan Ive build a tank?].

To be sure, any prediction about future sales of unannounced products should be viewed with caution. However if Amazon does launch a tablet, Amazon and Apple’s already complicated relationship is about to get a great deal more difficult.

Epps sees Amazon creating a layer of software and services on top of Google‘s Android smartphone and tablet software. That could create the kind of rich developer ecosystem that Apple’s competitors have lacked.

It could also inspire hardware manufacturers to build Amazon’s software and services into their tablets. “In a year from now, we could see a range of “Amazon tablets” made by different hardware manufacturers,” Epps writes.

Sounds a lot like how another Washington state company responded to Apple many, many years ago.

Only when HP cut the price of its tablet to $99 did it see significant traction in the market dominated by the iPad. Amazon is likely to take a similar approach to HP, except it won’t start the price near the iPad. It could potentially sell the tablet for close to breakeven, perhaps $300 or so, to gain traction.

Benzinga contributor, Robert Irr, discussed the potential for an Amazon tablet back in May and how it would affect the iPad’s dominance when it came to price. Irr wrote, “Margins are the name of the game and Amazon has a real opportunity to compress Apple’s margins from both a hardware and an app/content perspective. Android tablets are cheaper to manufacture so Amazon could feasibly unveil an Amazon tablet at $399 or even less. Another strategy would be to sell the hardware at a loss and earn margin from the content/app sales. Amazon could sell the tablet at bargain basement prices and generate revenue from these digital purchases. Keep in mind that Amazon has also been very successful with an ad-supported Kindle, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see them go back to this well again.”

If Amazon continues to follow the Procter & Gamble business model that has worked so well for them, there is no reason to think that Amazon will not be successful with its tablet. Jeff Bezos is the opposite of Steve Jobs, Tim Cook, and the rest of Apple’s team, but both arrive at the same conclusion. One gives the hardware away for practically nothing to have you buy its products and consumer its software. The other tries to get the highest margins possible out of everything it sells.

With recent reports suggesting that Apple is going to dramatically boost iPad 2 shipments in the third quarter, it should have a battle on its hands for the first time in the tablet market. With over a 90% market share, Apple is likely going to lose market share in the tablet game. The dominance is likely to end, but consumers will probably continue to keep picking the iPad over other tablets by a wide margin. The Apple halo effect is incredibly strong.

The Galaxy SII is already available in Europe and Korea, debuting as Samsung's fastest selling smartphone to date. The 3 variants in the U.S. will share many of the same specs, but some aspects, such as the screen sizes, battery capacities, and mobile radios, will be different.

Here are some of the common specs:

One specific spec worth highlighting is Samsung's Exynos processor, which should be quite a bit faster than the Tegra 2 that most dual-core phones have been using so far (with the exception of the TI OMAP on a few models). At 1.2GHz, the 2 cores should be mind-blowingly fast - faster than anything we here in the U.S. have experienced before.

Sprint will be offering the SII (labeled as the Epic 4G Touch) starting September 16th, at $199 for a new two-year agreement. The other two providers have yet to reveal their planned release dates (AT&T's released is rumored to be September 18th), but you can bet they will be at least somewhat in line with Sprint.

Below, I've highlighted (in bold) some of the specs that vary between the three devices.

T-Mobile Galaxy S II

Update: T-Mobile provided no details in their press release, but we've reached out to them, and here's what they had to say (no surprises there):

It was announced today at a New York City press event hosted by Samsung that AT&T would join T-Mobile and Samsung in offering the highly-anticipated Galaxy S II smartphone. The device will largely mirror the international version of the phone, which debuted last sprint. It sports a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, and an 8MP camera capable of 1080p video capture. The phone is compatible with AT&T’s HSPA+ network.

While a naming scheme similar to that used for the Samsung Captivate was not announced (the AT&T S II has been rumored to go under the name Attain), it is still possible we will learn of a new carrier branding closer to launch. For now, the device is merely listed as coming in the next few weeks. Pricing details are not known at this time.

T-Mobile

We’ve just received a press release from T-Mobile announcing their upcoming Samsung Galaxy S II. Details were vague with a release date of “this fall” and no official name for the device (possibly just Galaxy S II?). There’s was definitely no mention of the “Hercules” moniker we’ve known as the device for months now. Details we can confirm are a monster sized 4.5-inch SAMOLED Plus display, 1.2 Ghz Exynos processor, 8MP camera with 1080p video recording, 2MP front facing camera 16GB of internal storage and support for T-Mobile’s 4G network, although we still don’t know if this device will be taking advantage of T-Mobile’s faster 42Mbps HSPA+ data speeds when it’s released.

So there you have it. Other than a bigger screen and slightly modified curvier design, this is pretty much the standard Galaxy S II fare that most of us have been waiting 6 months for. A few things are still left up in the air but providing there are no extra surprises, is this Galaxy S II finally worth the wait?

This tablet looks same with iPad, but pre-loaded Android 2.2 OS, with customized interface that also is same as iPad. This tablet model is P800, built-in 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 16GB storage.

Apparently, the first step of emulating the CPU has already been accomplished but they still need to emulate support for the GPU, USB controller, Multitouch controller, memory, audio and all those secondary components like Bluetooth, GPS, compass, etc. And even if/once all of this accomplished, there is still the task at getting all the emulated pieces to actually boot. The iEmu team, no doubt, has one heck of an uphill battle ahead of them. (And we all know Apple’s legal team would have something to say about all of this.)

iEmu’s main goal for this Kickstarter project is simply to get “most iPad/iPhone apps” up and running on non-iOS devices like Android. Pretty sweet if they can actually accomplish it. Can you imagine all the the awesome iOS games you could have at your disposal in your hypothetical future? This would change everything. Again.

Ready for this week’s almost-too-ambitious Kickstarter project?

Meet iEmu, a new project from one of the iPhone’s earliest hackers. The goal? To get iOS up and running in an emulated state on Linux, Windows, Mac, and Android.

By building on top of the open-source QEMU emulator, project leader Chris Wade (who had a role in some of the earliest iPhone jailbreak exploits) is hoping to fully emulate the Samsung S5L8930 (A4) chipset used in the iPhone 4 and first generation iPad.

That should all be easy enough, right? I mean, your computer can play SNES games and arcade games! This should be a breeze!

Yeah, no. Even once they’ve figured out how to emulate the CPU (which, according to this page, they’ve done), they still need to hack together emulated support for the GPU, USB controller, Multitouch controller, the memory, the audio system, and all of the secondary components (the Bluetooth chip, GPS, compass, etc.) And once they’ve got all the hardware stuff covered? Then they get to figure out how to force all this stuff to boot. As much as I’d love to see this all happen, to call it a massive project would be an understatement.

“But wait!” you say. “Doesn’t Apple already provide their own iOS emulator?”

Sort of — but with some rather large footnotes. First and foremost, Apple’s solution is Mac only. Second, and not quite as easy to explain in a few words: Apple’s iOS testing system is a simulation, not an emulation. While it looks like iOS and acts like iOS, Apple’s simulator isn’t actually running a virtualized version of iOS. It’s a trivial difference for 99.9% of the world (and even the very vast majority of iOS developers) — but for a tiny chunk of people (security engineers digging for system flaws, for example), the difference is massive.

Now, for the ever-important question: Why? Because they (hope they) can. Beyond that, the goals are to get “most iPad/iPhone apps” up and running on non-iOS devices, allow for true iOS emulation on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices (Why iOS devices? Think virtual machines), and allow security engineers to properly explore iOS malware without potentially wrecking their actual devices. Plus, all the reverse engineering involved theoretically leads to documentation on all sorts of aspects of the iPhone that no one outside of Apple really understands.

Chris is trying to raise $20k for the project, which he says should cover his living expenses for 3+ months, as well as covering hosting costs and the production/shipping of Kickstarter rewards. If you’re down to throw a few greenbacks into the mission, you can find the Kickstarter project here, but know this: these guys have one hell of a mountain to climb. If they do manage to get things up and booting in a reasonable timeframe, don’t expect your Android device to be chewin’ through tons of iOS-native apps and games any time soon — there’s still the matter of hardware emulation being crazy computationally expensive to deal with.

The Xiaomi M1 Phone packs stunning amounts of power for its price - a Qualcomm 8260 Snapdragon chipset with a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, Adreno 220 graphics and 1GB of RAM. The battery packs plenty of juice, 1930mAh to be precise. That should be enough for two days of real life usage (real real life Xiaomi say).

Of course, let's not forget the real star here: the MIUI (pronounced "mee-you-eye") OS, which is a low-level custom UI based on Android 2.3.5. There's no question about MIUI's rapidly increasing popularity in recent years, but if you insist on trying other Android flavors on Xiaomi's hardware, then you'll be pleased to know that this phone lets you flash whatever firmware you like.

According to the second quarter of the year, HTC, Motorola, and Samsung claim the top three spots in China’s Android handset market, according to a report analyze by a Chinese app analytics company. The big three hold-up to 65% market share together. We have a Taiwan company, U.S. company and a Korea company dominant the Chinese market. While for the Chinese manufacturers, Huawei, Meizu, Lenovo and ZTE are the best four, but only hold-up to a 22% market share in total. Surprisingly, Meizu, the company who well-known for copying Apple iPhone, has gained a higher market share then the big Lenovo. As for those small Shanzhai manufacturers, their market share are not too obvious to be seen yet…

The Death of Shanzhai is Greatly Exaggerated

The market today is as consolidated as it will ever be–the ‘big three’ hold 65% market share together. Compare that to the feature-phone market, which is fractured among hundreds of small Shanzhai manufacturers in southern China, making ‘Motolobas’ and ‘Noklas’. Today’s smartphone market has high technology requirements, from chipset to touch screen, that Shanzhai manufacturers can’t match.

But rumors of the death of Shanzhai are greatly exaggerated. The Android market will only become more fractured from here. It’ll take time and there may not be hundreds of manufacturers as there are in feature-phones, but I fully expect smaller Chinese manufacturers to get in the game.

Case-in-point, the Xiaomi Phone was announced just last week, a 2000 RMB 1.5 GHz gadget that screams iPhone in its design and its modded Android OS. In the coming years I think we’ll see far cheaper and far more shameless copycat devices. Shanzhai will gradually be reborn in the smartphone market.

Android is white-hot in China: UMeng’s Top 100 Android Apps Grew 300-400%

UMeng also found that its top 100 apps gained 300% users in the first six months of 2011. Sessions (uses of those apps) grew by 400%. The insane Android growth curve that we’ve been waiting for has arrived.

Similarly, over the same time period GlobalStats shows Android growing from 2.4% to 5% of mobile OS market share. Google’s cute droids are taking China by storm.

As for those small Shanzhai manufacturers, the report did not reflect too much of their presence. The smartphone market usually has higher technology requirements, from internal chipset to touch screen, most of the Shanzhai manufacturers might not have the ability to produce those specifications. But those news on the death of Shanzhai are actually exaggerated. The Android market in China will become more fractured starting from here. It will take time for those Shanzhai to catch up. There may not be hundreds of manufacturers as there are in feature-phones, but we expect smaller Chinese manufacturers will find out their way to get into the game. In the next coming few months, we will properly see far cheaper Android devices, with copycat design. Shanzhai will gradually be reborn in the smartphone market, with the help of Google’s cute little green robot.

Well, if you think Samsung is done tweaking the Samsung Galaxy S II, you are very mistaken. The high-tech company is getting ready to unveil the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE at IFA in Berlin this week, alongside an LTE version of its still elusive Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 -- and we'll be there to get some hands on time. Both devices are sporting an updated dual-core processor running at 1.5GHz, while the S II is also getting a size bump and moving up to a 4.5-inch screen. The Tab remains otherwise unchanged, rocking the same 1200 x 800 screen and super-svelte (8.6mm thick) design. Honestly, we're not sure what else you need to know -- 4G LTE and an over-the-top processor? OK, maybe price and availability would be nice, but you'll just have to make do with some PR for now. That’s the lesson from the fire sale on Hewlett-Packard’s TouchPad tablet that turned a commercial flop into a cult hit.

Once HP decided to kill off the tablet and slashed the price to $99 from $399, consumers flocked to stores, which are now running out of a device that had been gathering dust.

The experiment in consumer psychology proved that the market is hungry for tablets outside of Apple’s iPad -- if the price is right.

Amazon is poised to enter the tablet fray with an Android-powered tablet in late September or October, a source with knowledge of the plans said yesterday.

The device will sell for hundreds less than the entry-point $499 iPad, a feat few tablet makers have accomplished, the source said.

Amazon is considered one of the few credible threats to Apple and has been willing to sell its electronics at a loss in hopes of generating more digital media purchases.

“If Amazon is particularly aggressive on pricing, that could be a trigger for many players to rethink the sales price of tablets,” said Charles King, the lead analyst at Pund-IT.

Aside from the TouchPad phenomenon, the lower-price tablet market is starting to surface, including entrants such as Vizio, which launched a $299 tablet this month.

ITG Investment Research said that tablets running Google’s Android are starting to chip away at Apple’s iPad marketshare, and price will be key to further erosion.

“We expect to see more and more lower-end, more-affordable Android devices enter the marketplace, which should further allow Android to increase its share,” said Tony Berkman, CEO of ITG.

The pressure is on to build cheaper handheld devices, not just tablets but smartphones.

Yesterday, Samsung showed off four new Android phones and Nokia touted three new Symbian smartphones, which are all built for low-end market.

The cheaper phones cost $200 or less and consumers sometimes get them free after signing long-term contracts with wireless carriers.

While competitors try to undersell the iPad, Apple is reportedly developing a cheaper iPhone to challenge rivals offering low-end Android smartphones.

A New York Post article commenting on the recent $99 HP TouchPad craze points to price as a main reason why no tablet has been able to topple the iPad’s top ranking. Given that many have attempted to match the iPad’s $499 price tag without much success, the report mentions that Amazon may stand the best chance by offering tablets priced “hundreds” of dollars less than the iPad. An aggressive pricing model might include Amazon accepting losses on the actual hardware in hopes that the sale of digital media such as apps, eBooks and video rentals will compensate for a device priced at a low margin. Unlike other manufacturers, Amazon certainly has the retail power to take such a risk.

But Amazon is rumored to be launching two versions of their tablet, a 7-inch and 10-inch model. While it is feasible that the 7-inch version with its supposed NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor could come in for well less than $499, it is hard to imagine the 10-inch model, which is said to be one of the first devices that will launch with NVIDIA’s quad-core Kal El chipset, will be able to do the same. That is unless Amazon is more than willing to accept negative revenues on the tablet, putting much faith on the device’s ability to generate revenues in other ways. There is always the possibility that Amazon takes an ad-subsidized approach such as the one recently introduced for the Kindle.

Amazon’s first Android devices have much of the tech world waiting in anticipation to see how the retailer approaches elements such as hardware and pricing, and for good reason. Could Amazon, as the New York Post  piece suggests, stand the best chance of stealing the lead away from the iPad?

Okay, you can file this one under “Laugh Out Loud” if it turns out to be true. Allegedly, in an attempt by Samsung’s legal team at squashing a Nexus Prime leak, they’ve simultaneously managed to confirm its existence. Just take a look at this “Cease and Desist” letter where they don’t sound too happy with someone getting their hands on their special Ice Cream Sandwich firmware citing, “exclusive property of Samsung.”

The Nexus line of phones have been widely likened to the iPhone when it comes to the wealth of speculation, rumors, and general obsession over the upcoming release of those devices. With the next version of the both of these prolific devices on the way, details are slowly leaking out from everywhere just waiting to be confirmed or denied. Many of the things that come out, like the fabricated iPhone 5 website or news that the Nexus S was being made by LG are prime examples of this.

Maybe it’s greed, maybe it’s for that brief moment in the spotlight, but some of these rumors are just plain made up. However, when the manufacturer of the device opts to send you a Cease and Desist for claiming you have things that shouldn’t be public yet, they have to be careful that they aren’t actually confirming the rumor that was being fought in the first place.

While attempting to squash a rumored leak of the firmware for Samsung’s upcoming wonderphone, the legal team at Samsung accidentally seems to have confirmed that the device is in fact the Nexus Prime and is, in fact, being made by Samsung. With that speculation out of the way, now we can focus on the important things, like what it will have under the hood and which network it will be on. It’s clear that Samsung is getting closer and closer to a release with Google, and so far the majority of the rumors are pointing towards an October Release on Verizon Wireless, but sadly there’s not a Cease and Desist email to verify that.

A Nexus Prime by Samsung has a lot of possibilities. Will we be looking at a 4-inch phone, 4.3-inch, or a 4.5-inch one? Will it use Samsung’s new Super Clear LCD or will it have Super AMOLED HD? Will it run one of Samsung’s Exynos dual core processors, or have Samsung and Google partnered up with nVidia? Since Samsung also made the Nexus S, can we assume NFC will be enabled? What about some of the other rumors we’ve heard about Android @ Home, Facial recognition software, or Qi inductive charging?

Of course, like everything found on the net, there’s always the possibility this letter could be a fake. But it just sounds so official and angry (minus the small “immediate” typo). So, now that we may have the manufacturer out of the way, word that Texas Instruments will be supplying the OMAP4 processor, and an rumored October launch for the Google-branded superphone, all that’s left now is figuring out that dang carrier. Anyone have any guesses (or more leaks)?

The Samsung GT-I9250 which has a 99.9% chance of turning out to be the upcoming Nexus Prime has just passed its WiFi certification today. Right on schedule with that leaked Samsung roadmap, the eve of the Nexus Prime is almost upon us. In case you needed a refresher, this device will be the premier Google device running the latest version of Android Ice Cream Sandwich. The device will have a 1280×720 HD screen so bright, so vivid, it will be like looking into the face of Andy Rubin himself. Word is Google has made nice with Texas Instruments so you can expect the latest OMAP4 processor they have to offer. No word yet on a carrier but I’ve heard from some people, that know some people, that rob people — it could be Verizon.

JailBreakMe is a browser exploit which lets iOS users jailbreak their iDevices simply by visiting a cleverly crafted web page with that device. It exploits an error in the PDF display code in specific versions of iOS, gaining root access and installing an alternative app store, Cydia. If that sounds scary, its because it is. Apple released patches very quickly in each case.

This comes only a few days after CyanogenMod creator Steve Kondik hooked up with Samsung to work on its Android software layer, and also follows Microsoft’s friendly reaction to efforts at jailbreaking Windows Phone. It does seem like we’re witnessing a new trend toward collaboration with, rather than prohibition of, the grassroots coding communities that build up around popular devices. Now if we can just get Sony to jump on board with this idea, the whole world will be a happier place.

At an event Monday at New York's Time Warner Center, Samsung will announce it is selling the device starting in September on AT&T Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile USA's networks, according to people familiar with the plans, but Verizon Wireless said it won't offer the device.

Jobs will no doubt still play a large role in Apple’s operations, with the move being similar to one recently undertaken at Google that saw Eric Schmidt’s duties shifted from CEO to Executive Chairman. Jobs’ history of illness likely was a large factor in the restructuring of Apple’s higher brass. His new position will likely come with a reduced workload.

Let there be no question: ours would be a very different industry, were it not for Steve Jobs. Few, if any individuals have had so profound an effect on their given spaces; a unprecedented track record that began in 1976 with the co-founding of Apple. In earliest incarnation, the company would prove the driving force of the personal computer explosion of the early '80s, beginning with the Apple II -- one of the industry's first hugely popular microcomputers. The Macintosh shook things up yet again, a launch celebrated by the debut of the "1984" ad during that year's Superbowl. That line helped break both the graphical user interface and the mouse to a massive audience.

Soon after, Jobs would resign, going on to form NeXT. The company never managed sales figures anywhere near the previous endeavor, but its products would prove highly influential, forming, among other things, the basis of Apple's paradigm-shifting OS X operating system. While Steve Jobs was focused on NeXT and The Graphic Group -- the company that would later morph into the far more familiar Pixar -- Apple suffered a series of defeats.

Jobs returned to the company first as an advisor, then interim CEO, finally reclaiming his role as the head of the company. In 1998, the company reimagined desktop computing yet again with the iMac. In 2001, the company unveiled the first Apple Store and debuted the iPod and iTunes that same year, drastically altering the state of the music industry.

In 2007, the company debuted the iPhone, before it gave the world the App Store a year later. Smartphones existed before Apple, sure, but since the introduction of the iPhone, they've never been the same. And after years of rumors, 2010 saw the debut of the iPad, a device that did the unimaginable, making the tablet a viable and indeed thriving consumer device.

Over the years, Jobs have proven an enigmatic and sometimes polarizing figure in this industry, but whatever words one might immediately leap upon to describe the black turtlenecked CEO, his impact can never be denied. And the aftershocks will no doubt be felt for decades to come. We knew that this day would come, but we were nonetheless taken by surprise when Jobs announced that he would be resigning his post at the head of the company, stepping aside for Apple COO Tim Cook.

In other obvious news, Android phones and iPhone continue to sit pretty atop the US smartphone market, according to a recent NPD study. The current titans of the smartphone industry both saw their pieces of the OS pie increase in Q2 of 2011, putting Andy Rubin's green robot in the lead with 52 percent and Apple at 29 percent. Newly adopted webOS, and Microsoft's WP7 and Windows Mobile all managed to cling to their respective 5 percent shares with no yearly change, leaving only BlackBerry OS to experience an 11 percent decline. But the real meat and potatoes of the report focuses on Google's soon-to-be in-house partner: Motorola. Despite the rosy picture painted by recent acquisition talks, the company appears to be facing tough competition from Android OEM rivals, and the wireless market as a whole. While Apple owns the largest share of handset shipments and profits among the world’s top smartphone vendors, Android is still the No. 1 smartphone operating system on the planet by a wide margin. Market research firm Canalys on Monday released its second-quarter smartphone figures, reaffirming impressive growth across the global smartphone industry. The firm says the worldwide smartphone market grew 73% year-over-year to more than 107.7 million units shipped last quarter, and Android lead the market in 35 of the 56 countries Canalys tracks. According to the firm’s estimates, Android shipments in the second quarter ballooned 379% over the same quarter last year to 51.9 million units. This impressive growth helped Android gain 48% of global smartphone shipments in the quarter. With 20.3 million iOS smartphones shipped in the June quarter, Apple’s mobile OS topped Symbian to steal the No. 2 spot with a 19% share of the global market. BlackBerry shipments grew 11% in Q2 though RIM’s global share slid, and Microsoft, still waiting for Nokia to launch its first batch of Windows Phones, shipped fewer than 1.5 million devices last quarter to take just 1% of the market — down 52% year-over-year. Canalys also notes that Apple was the top smartphone vendor in the second quarter, while Samsung grew 421% year-over-year to take the No. 2 spot with 17 million smartphones shipped. Canalys’ full press release follows below.
